Sister Susan “Susie” Skinner

Anna’s sister Susie married Stephan Smith Skinner in Watertown, South Dakota.  She had 4 children with him. She became very sick in 1903. I seem to remember seeing she had consumption, but I can’t find the source right now. Anna was living in Oregon at the time and moved back to be with her. Susie died 27 Apr 1904 in Watertown. Here’s an article from April 15, 1904.

Here’s an article about her funeral dated May 3, 1904.

Newspaper Articles About the Skinners

Here’s a few articles. I think the first article is taking about S.S. Skinner’s father, who had the same name. The last article details the death of Susie’s husband only 1 year later. He drowned on Pelican Lake while duck hunting with a group of friends. He went missing at dusk and when his capsized boat was found the next morning a search party went looking for him. He was found only 30 feet from the shore in water only 3 feet deep. His feet were firmly imbedded in the oozy mud on the bottom and had fallen backward. They guessed he had struggled so hard to extricate himself that his muscles cramped up and he fell backward, unable to stand up again.

Who was Herbert Skinner? He was Susie’s son.

Grinde to Anna Family Tree

What Happened to Anna and Susie after their parents died?

Langdon and Grinde Land in Clear Lake

It looks like they lived with family in the area. First, who was Ole O. Grinde?

  1. He was Bottolf’s brother. He lived in the township of Norden, just below ND Clark’s home.
  2. Why didn’t Susie and Anna live with him?  I think Susie probably did, but Anna lived with A. B. Anderson.
  3. Who was A. B. Anderson?  Ole Grinde was married to Amelia Anderson. She was A. B. Anderson’s sister. In a sense, Anna ends up living with family. She was at least with relatives.
  4. Did any other relatives live in the area?  Yes. I’m not sure how many, but Anna’s grandmother was also in the area. I’m guessing she was probably living with Ole. Her name was Anna Grinde.
  5. Where does Anna Grinde fit in the family tree? Herbert Langdon is my 2nd great grandfather. Anna Grinde is my 4th great grandmother.

They are all buried right in front. East Highland Church is just south of Ole Grinde’s land. When we visited in 2014, we didn’t know that they were related. We took photos because of the names. Glad we did!

Anna Grinde died 25 Apr. 1900. Her headstone is pictured above. Ole and his wife Amelia are buried next to her.

Ole died in 1935 and is buried in Brandt, SD.

Clear Lake Centennial Book? It was published in late 1980 or so. I’m guessing because other people on this page died in the late 1980s. It tells us that Anna lived with A. B. Anderson. Below is a photo of the A. B. Anderson farm near Brandt where Anna went to live at 12 years old after her dad died.

Donna Langdon Family Research

Here’s an email about Archie and Hattie gathered from Donna’s research. I’d love to see the rest, but this is all I have:

Archie was born in Deuel County in the Clear Lake, South Dakota area.  His parents were Anna and Herbert Langdon.  When Archie was a baby, they moved to the Yoncalla, Oregon area and lived there until Archie was about 13 years of age.  They then moved back to the Clear Lake area.

Hattie Wohler was born in Brandt, South Dakota.  Her parents were Carrie and Lars Wohler.  They farmed in the Brandt South Dakota area for several years.  When Hattie and her sisters and brothers were young, her parents were divorced.  Her father moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he operated a hotel.  Her mother stayed on the farm with the children and continued to operate the farm with the help of her son Henry.  In later years, after her father Lars became ill, he returned to the Brandt area where he died.  Both Hattie’s parents are buried at the cemetery at Brandt, South Dakota.

Hattie and Archie were married in Brandt, South Dakota at the Highland Lutheran Church.  They farmed a few years in the Brandt and Clear Lake area.  They then moved to Watertown, South Dakota where Archie worked for the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad.  He worked for the railroad until 1922 and lost his job because of the strike.  He then worked at several other jobs until they moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1925 with their eight children and Archie started working at the John Morrell Packing Plant.  He worked there until his retirement in 1926.  Shortly after Hattie and Archie moved to Sioux Falls, their son Loren Herbert (Lorraine’s twin) died from spinal meningitis when he was approximately 9 months old.  Hattie and Archie lived to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary.  They both died in Sioux Falls and are buried at the Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

Kari’s side. (The info below is from an email I received from Norway)

Email 1:  This entry with Synneva Endresdotter and her apparently unknown origin turned me on, and I have now found out that Ole Olson Huke and Synneva Eriksdotter Henjum were married in Leikanger June 27, 1833.  She is called Eriksdotter in the 1865 census as well!  However, there turns out to be two Synneva Eriksdotters in Leikanger born about the same time, and I need some time to figure out which is the right one!

Email 2:  In the meantime I have found Synneva Eriksdotter.  She was from the Henjum farm and born in 1807, but for some reason she is recorded under Njos 678d with unknown destiny!
